1) What key conventions of TV advertising can you find in the Galaxy advert?

The main key conventions of this advertisement is the galaxy chocolate and Audrey Hepburn 

2) What is the key message the Galaxy advert is communicating about its chocolate? The slogan for the advert will help you with this question.

The use of the slogan “why have cotton when you can have silk” tells the audience that the chocolate feels rich

3) Who is Audrey Hepburn and why did Galaxy select Audrey Hepburn for this advert? 

Audrey Hepburn was a big Hollywood star in the 1950-1960

The actor Audrey Hepburn was on the bus and then the bus suddenly broke down but then the problem gets resolved by her entering a man’s car and this is used to appeal to the audience

1) What year was the advert produced?

The OMO advert was created in 1955

2) How were women represented in most adverts in the 1950s? Add as much detail to this answer as you can as these are the social, cultural and historical contexts we will need to write about in the exam.

Women in adverts in the 1950s were heavily portrayed as housewives who enjoy their duties

3) How does the heading message ('OMO makes whites bright') and the style of the text promote the product?

Gives the idea of the product keeping everything fresh and clean with a long lasting effect than what other products result may be

4) Analyse the mise-en-scene in the advert (CLAMPS): how is costume, make-up and placement of the model used to suggest women's role in society?

In the advertisement of OMO the women’s pose tries to imply how excited she is to do the washing and the red lipstick shows the women’s femininity 

5) Why is a picture of the product added to the bottom right of the advert?


The placement of the image of the product is added at the bottom right as it’s a Typography and it catches the attention of the audience 


6) What are the connotations of the chosen colours in this advert - red, white and blue?

The colours in the advertisement are bright and catch the attention of people easier

7) How does the anchorage text use persuasive language to encourage the audience to buy the product? Give examples.

The anchorage text of this advert “whiteness alone won’t do” tries to portray to the audience that their clothing won’t only be white but bright and that they should buy the product as it makes the viewer think that’s this product is the best for washing

8) What representation of women can be found in this OMO advert? Make specific reference to the advert and discuss stereotypes.

The stereotype in the advertisement is that women do the chores at home and look feminine whilst doing so 


9) What is the preferred reading for this advert - what did the producers of the advert want the audience to think in 1955?

The preferred reading of this advertisement is that women do the house chores happily and love being housewives 

10) What is the oppositional reading for this advert - how might a modern audience respond to this text and the representation of women here?

The modern audience would find this advert very sexist and think that women shouldn’t be thought as personal cleaners that only take care of the house and children

Blog post on camera shots

Eye-level angle 
The camera is positioned at a camera angle directly at the eye level of the character. The character is usually captured from the knees to the head, with very little surrounding context.



Extreme long shot
 An extreme long shot is a view from a great distance, in which people appear as small dots


Long shot
A view of a scene that is shot from a considerable distance, so that people appear as indistinct shapes

Mid-shot
A film shot that stretches from around the waist (or sometimes the knees) of a subject up to their head.

Close-up
A movie shot taken of the subject at close range intended to show detail to the viewer

Extreme close-up
A shot that frames a subject very closely, often so much so that the outer portions of the subject are cut off by the edges of the frame


High-angle
 A shot where the camera looks down at the subject from above
Low angle
A shot taken from a camera angle positioned to point upwards from under the subject


 Mise-en-scene




“Mise-en-Scène”
Mise-en-scène is a French term meaning ‘Put on Stage’.
It refers to the Media language used by the producer in
their media product to communicate with their audience
so...everything we see on screen. We can remember what
this includes using the acronym CLAMPS:

        lighting
        action/actors
        makeup and hair
        props 
        setting



1. Costume

Denotation- I can see in their clothes that they have a lot of greens , browns and yellow

Connotation- This has connotations that the people may be explorers or villagers


 2. Costume

Denotation- I can see three woman wearing the same silver dress that contains blue accents with matching silver gloves

Connotation- This has connotations that these woman are very elegant and may be famous people


3. Lighting

Denotation- i can see a light glowing through the smoke that has been released

Connotation- This shows that there may have been an explosion of some sort that sort of looks like lava 


4. Lighting

Denotation- I can see that in this photo there lighting coming from behind clouds 

Connotation - Shows that the sun is rising or the sun is setting.


5. Actors

Denotation- I can see by the actors facial expression that the character is very focused and tensed up

Connotation- shows the the character is trying to study the can of cola for some reason
